A creamy and flavorful French onion dip featuring homemade caramelized onions, fresh herbs, sour cream, and mayonnaise. Perfect as a party appetizer or snack that is better than store-bought versions and easy to make ahead.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon butter or oil (for caramelizing onions)
  • 1 cup sour cream (organic preferred)
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise (homemade preferred but store-bought works)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chives, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, adjust to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, adjust to taste
  • 1 clove garlic, minced

Instructions

  1. Heat butter or oil in a wide skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions and let them cook undisturbed for 2 to 3 minutes to brown on one side.
  3. Reduce heat to the lowest setting and continue cooking the onions, stirring every few minutes, for about 30 to 45 minutes until they are soft, golden brown, and caramelized. If onions stick or brown too quickly, add a splash of water or broth and scrape the browned bits from the pan with a wooden spoon.
  4. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute to soften and integrate the flavor.
  5. Transfer the caramelized onions to the fridge to cool completely.
  6. Once cooled, roughly chop the onions into bite-sized pieces.
  7. In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped caramelized onions, sour cream, mayonnaise, minced chives, minced parsley, kosher salt, and freshly ground black pepper.
  8. Stir gently until the dip is smooth and creamy.
  9. Serve immediately or cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to allow flavors to meld and deepen.
  10. Store leftovers in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to one week.

Notes

Make caramelized onions ahead of time to save prep time on the day of serving., Using fresh herbs like chives and parsley adds brightness and superior flavor compared to dried herbs., You can substitute mayonnaise with Greek yogurt for a tangy, protein-rich alternative or cream cheese for a thicker, richer dip., Avoid freezing the dip as the texture of sour cream and mayonnaise may change upon thawing., This dip pairs well with potato chips, vegetable sticks (carrots, celery), pita chips, baked potatoes, or on a charcuterie board., This recipe makes a perfect kid-friendly appetizer with its creamy texture and mild sweet onion flavor.
