Classic French Toast is a warm, sweet breakfast treat made by dipping bread in a simple egg mixture and cooking it until golden and soft. It has a fluffy inside with just the right crisp on the edges—perfect when topped with fruit, syrup, or powdered sugar. This easy recipe is family-friendly and brightens any morning.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk (any type works)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 8 slices of bread (thick bread works best – brioche, challah, or sturdy sandwich bread)
  • Butter or oil for frying
  • Optional toppings: syrup, fresh fruit, powdered sugar, whipped cream

Instructions

  1. Prepare the egg mixture by whisking the eggs in a large bowl until smooth. Add milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt. Whisk again until all ingredients are combined and mixture is slightly frothy with cinnamon swirls.
  2. Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add butter or oil to coat the surface and let it melt gently.
  3. Pour the egg mixture into a shallow dish. Dip each slice of bread carefully in the mixture, soaking for a few seconds on each side without becoming soggy. Thicker bread may need slightly longer.
  4. Place the soaked bread slices in the hot pan. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes on each side until golden brown and fragrant. The inside should be soft but not soggy. Add more butter as needed to prevent sticking. Repeat with all slices.
  5. Serve warm with desired toppings such as syrup, fresh fruits, powdered sugar, or cinnamon sugar.

Notes

Whisk the egg mixture thoroughly to prevent clumping of cinnamon and sugar., Ensure the pan is heated before cooking for even browning., Add toppings immediately after cooking so they stick better., A tiny pinch of salt balances the sweetness., Day-old bread is preferred as it absorbs the egg mixture well without falling apart., For crunchier edges, melt a little extra butter in the pan., Optional: Add 1 tablespoon cocoa powder for chocolate flavor or a splash of orange juice for a subtle twist., Leftover French toast can be frozen with parchment paper between slices and reheated later.
